World Osteoporosis Day

2003: Quality of life

2003

The theme of World Osteoporosis Day 2003 focused on the serious (and underestimated) impact of fractures on quality of life. Vertebral and hip fractures in particular place a major burden on the world’s older population. Fractures usually cause intense pain and can result in long-term disability and high mortality rates among elderly hip fracture patients. Loss of function and independence among hip fracture survivors is profound, with 40% unable to walk independently, 60% requiring assistance a year later (34) and - because of these losses - 33% becoming totally dependent or in a nursing home in the year following the fracture.

In conjunction with the World Osteoporosis Campaign, IOF issued the first global TV spot to ever address the issue of osteoporosis (TV spot, ‘The Train).
