Future doctors joined the event “Say No to Fragile Bones” in Yaroslavl
In Yaroslavl, volunteers of the Russian Patient Society “Osteorus” and representatives of the Russian Association on Osteoporosis (RAOP) held an educational event.
The event was timed to the World Osteoporosis Day, which is marked annually on October 20. The theme of the year is “Say No to Fragile Bones”.
On October 18,2024. traditionally the public event took place in the Clinical Emergency Care Hospital named after N.V. Solovyov on the basis of the Planned Consultative Care Department with the Osteoporosis Treatment and Diagnostic Center.
Representatives of the regional “Women's Union” and participants of “the Bone Healthy Breakfast” event came to the hospital to undergo free densitometry examination, receive specialist advice, and listen to information about disease prevention in a friendly tea party atmosphere.
Every year Yaroslavl “Osteorus” volunteers come up with new ideas and apply different informational tools to increase audience outreach and conduct educational activities aimed at raising awareness of osteoporosis among patients, society and authorities.
Students of the Yaroslavl State Medical Univesity were invited to the hospital. Dr. Ksenia Belova, Head of the Department of Public Health and Health Care of the Yaroslavl State Medical University (YSMU) , Vice-President of the Russian Association on Osteoporosis Physicians (report “Osteoporosis Day 2024 - ”Say No to Fragile Bones!"), Pavel Tikhonov, chief freelance specialist of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Yaroslavl region on geriatrics (report “From Hippocrates to the present day”), Khatia Gorjeladze, head of the Department of planned consultative care with the treatment and diagnostic center of osteoporosis of the Clinical Emergency Care Hospital named after N.V. Solovyov (report “Osteoporosis - epidemic of the XXI century made very informative presentations.
Ksenia Belova also spoke about the activities of the “Osteoru” patient society, the importance of Russia's participation in the educational campaign of the World Osteoporosis Day, the involvement of students in the topic, Capture the Fracture( FLS ) program etc. “Osteorus” is actively working to raise awareness about the prevention of the disease. Volunteers talk at various venues about healthy eating habits to keep bones healthy, RAOP specialists give advice on how to prevent fractures, recommend self-diagnosis using the FRAX survey, and remind about the need to stay physically active.
Nowadays Russian Association on Osteoporosis (RAOP) and All-Russian Patient Society “OSTEORUS” are working in close contact with the Yaroslavl State Medical University (YSMU) to prioritize bone health.
Dr. Khatia Gordgeladze had a talk with the patients of the traumatology department of the hospital with the focus on how to prevent secondary fractures. The cartoon “TV Channel Health” made by the children of the orphanage “Solnechny” in Yaroslavl was shown to the patients. They also received informational materials.
A lot of work is also done among the youth audience, so that from childhood a culture of balanced nutrition is formed to keep bones healthy. An All-Russian children’s drawing contest is held annually and the winning drawings with doctors' recommendations how to keep bones healthy become the basis for a wall calendar, which is the business card of the public. Vice-President of RAOP Ksenia Belova handed the lecturers a 2025 calendar, which is a bright guide to useful information. It was possible to take brochures and leaflets on the topic of the educational WOD campaign. The story about the event was shown on the local TV channel.
The new format of the informational and educational campaign “Say No to Fragile Bones” within the framework of World Osteoporosis Day with the involvement of the medical student audience was successful. Such events contribute to improving the educational level of future doctors, broaden their horizons and will help them to conduct productive work with patients in the future.
We express huge gratitude to IOF for providing our national osteoporosis societies with new ideas and new recourses which make our WOD events very successful
